How to Clean Unglazed Tiles

Many people use shiny glazed ceramic tiles to improve their floor's resistance to stain and to help make cleaning easier. However, some people prefer unglazed tiles for their homes. That is because the latter offer a matte finish, which is perfect for homes with country themes. The lack of shine gives the room a pleasant rustic atmosphere. In addition, the lack of a glaze covering makes them slip-resistant even when wet, which means they are safer to walk on. They are also very durable and are even used in commercial and industrial establishments. The downside of unglazed tiles is that cleaning them is a big chore. Here are some tips on how to make cleaning them a bit easier.

First, sweep the entire floor with a stiff broom. Do not worry when it comes to scratching them because unglazed tiles are quite scratch-resistant. When sweeping the floor, do not forget to include the grout lines where a lot of dirt collects. Next, add one cup of white distilled vinegar to a gallon of warm water in a pail. Next add a teaspoon of dish-washing detergent to the water. Do not add the last ingredient to running water or else you will create too many suds. Mix the cleaning solution thoroughly.

Next, dip a rag into the solution and wring it out well. The cloth should be damp and not too wet. Too wet and the solution can soak through the grout, staining or even damaging it. Finally, wipe the damp cloth over the floor to remove all traces of grime and dirt. You can also use a stiff cleaning brush in addition to the cloth to scrub off the dirt that accumulates in crevices that are too deep for the cloth to reach.
